Travel to Menorca - prepare your trip

If you plan to travel to Menorca, you should read this article as we intend to offer you some recommendations that we consider useful for your trip to Menorca.

How much time do I need?

We all ask ourselves, when traveling, if the time we have at our disposal will be enough to visit the cities or places we want to visit. It is impossible to say exactly how long the optimum time should be, because it depends on many factors and even how we are and the preferences we have might influence it, but, in our opinion, 7 days will be enough to know both the north and the south of the island, try the local cuisine and visit the most important towns and cities of the island.

On the other hand, if you do not want to hurry up and want everything to happen little by little, having time to go shopping, visit virgin beaches or return to a beach that you liked, take excursions along the Camí de Cavalls, visit several viewpoints, make a kayak route, visit some of the monuments of Menorca ... then we would recommend you to spend between 10 and 15 days.

Some curiosities - let's get to know Menorca better

As you can see even on Google Maps, Menorca is a small island that is part of the Balearic Islands. As a curiosity, you can reach anywhere on the island in less than 1 hour by car. The population of Menorca is about 91,000 inhabitants according to the 2017 census. It is also important to know that the 2 main cities are Maò and Ciutadella, with about 30,000 inhabitants in each. The driving distance from one to another is 45 minutes without traffic jams.

As we have already mentioned in another article, the climate of Menorca is Mediterranean with hot summers. The months with more sunshine and daylight hours are from May to September. Menorca is a Biosphere Reserve (it turned 25 in 2018!). Menorca has thousands of kilometers of Paret Seca, 7 lighthouses distributed along its coast, and a famous road that goes all the way around the island, that reaches up to 185km. In Menorca there are many virgin beaches, but we must bear in mind that in July and August we will find more tourists taking a bath in them, although they are not usually crowded except the two or three most famous.

At the same time, in Menorca there are many fun local parties in which the Menorcan horses take part. The most famous of the parties is that of Sant Joan in Ciutadella, about which we have already spoken in a previous publication.

You can do dozens of outdoor activities almost anywhere on the island: kayaking, snorkeling, diving, hiking, biking, paragliding, sailing, horse riding, jeep safaris ...

Even in bad weather you have many possibilities to enjoy the island.

How do I move: do I rent a car, motorcycle or go by bus?

Between June and October, public transport in Menorca has more frequencies and destinations than in the rest of the months, since the services of the island are accustomed (and adapted) to the increase of visitors who come to spend the summer on this idyllic island.

It is important to take into account the fact that, as of 2018, local authorities are beginning to prohibit the use of private transport to access emblematic places of the island (when we say this, we refer first to Macarella, Tortuga, Presili, Mongofra and Favàritx).

Despite these measures to take care of the environment, there are people who prefer to have the flexibility of being able to move around without any time limits given by a car or motorcycle.

Arguments for renting a car: if you want to have maximum flexibility, this is your option. However, keep in mind that some car parks may be full in summer, especially in July and August.

Arguments for renting a motorcycle: if you go as a couple and during the months of July and August (with no intention of crossing the island every day) it is a good option to avoid traffic jams and crowds in parking lots of some beaches and, above all, in Ciutadella and Maó .

Arguments to use bus: they offer you maximum comfort and service, at a lower price than other options. On the other hand, you will have limited schedules to the bus services you take.

Plan your activities: what to do?

If you have decided to go to Menorca and if you follow our blog regularly, you should know that there are many activities to do, especially in the May-October period. Therefore, a recommendation that we believe will greatly facilitate your stay on the island is that you look at those activities that interest you and book early, especially if you are going to visit the island between June and September.

Among the best outdoor activities are the kayak, which is an experience that you cannot miss and that fits all budgets; If you can spend more money, we recommend the sailboat excursion, which is beautiful. At the same time, among the best activities by boat and sailboat there are included motor boat excursions, that are also highly recommended.
